Guest Blog: Keep going by staying lean and green

Hello followers of the Panther! Been a while since the last post but I’ve finally caught up enough to share a great method of keeping your health momentum going strong.

We all know how it goes. The New Year comes and we promise we’ll be good. Workouts, better food choices, the works. Usually we make the promises with a glass of bubbly in our hands and a tummy full of appetizers. Sure enough, after a few weeks it starts getting tougher to do. Parties, work, soccer practice, they all team up to throw a wrench into your plans.

Here’s a way to help fight back a bit: a delicious cleansing shake! Drink this invigorating and healthful shake in the morning for a few days to help clear things out of your system, and you might be amazed at what other good choices you make. Research has shown that when you start your day with vitamin rich nutritious choices you are less likely to select the high calorie, low nutrition foods for your lunch snacks and dinner that day. After a few days you might just pick the habit up and find yourself feeling (and looking!) a whole lot better.

The goods:

1 cup fresh kale
1 cup fresh spinach
1/2 banana
1/2 pear (any kind is fine, whatever is in season and looks good!)
1/2 Orange Juice (fresh squeezed if you can do it, otherwise find one not from concentrate with lots of pulp)
1/2 cup filtered water
1 tbsp flax seed
a few cubes of ice

Toss all that in your blender, blend it up and enjoy! If you need a tiny bit more sweetness you can add a teaspoon or two of local wildflower honey or organic agave, but don’t overdo it!

Feel free to experiment throughout the year with this basic recipe. Strawberries, blueberries and blackberries also add great flavor and antioxidants  Just make sure you keep the greens, they put the oomph into this blended treat!
